Founder & Chairman; Senior Cataract, Refractive & Anterior Segment Surgeon, Acura Vision (Roop Netralaya), Meerut
Dr. Roop, an AIIMS-trained senior cataract, refractive and anterior-segment surgeon, is a pioneer of modern eye surgery in Western UP. He has treated 10 lakh+ patients and performed 80,000+ cataract surgeries.
Dr. Roop is the Founder and Chairman of Acura Vision (Roop Netralaya), Meerut — one of the most trusted tertiary eye-care institutions in Western Uttar Pradesh and the Delhi/NCR region. He completed his MBBS and his MD in Ophthalmology at the Dr. R.P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and has since built a comprehensive super-specialty eye hospital in Meerut. He is a senior cataract, refractive and anterior-segment surgeon.
A pioneer of modern eye surgery in the region, Dr. Roop introduced intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in Meerut in 1989, phacoemulsification in 1993, and femtosecond-laser technology in January 2012 — ahead of many national centres. Over a career spanning more than three decades he has treated over 10 lakh patients and performed more than 80,000 cataract surgeries, and is widely regarded as a father figure in ophthalmology across Western UP and Delhi/NCR.
Dr. Roop established tertiary-level eye care in Meerut after his training at AIIMS, New Delhi, with a mission to bring the region the standard of surgery available at the country's leading institutes. In 1989 he pioneered intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in Meerut, ending the era of thick aphakia glasses for cataract patients, and in 1993 he introduced phacoemulsification — sutureless, small-incision cataract surgery with faster recovery — to Western UP.
Over the following decades he built an unbroken series of regional firsts and, alongside Dr. Sangeeta, brought LASIK to the region in 1998, establishing Acura Vision as a long-standing pioneer in refractive surgery. He introduced femtosecond-laser-assisted LASIK in 2012 and upgraded to the Ziemer Z8 — the world's fastest femtosecond laser — in 2022.
An avid innovator and surgeon of complex cases, Dr. Roop is known for his work in hard-cataract phacoemulsification — his “circumferential chop” technique was recognised at the ASCRS Film Festival, Chicago, in 2008 — as well as scleral-fixated IOLs, glaucoma and combined anterior-segment surgery. He has designed surgical instruments, including the internationally manufactured “Roop's Chopper” (Epsilon Instruments), and personally guides the selection and commissioning of all technology at the centre. Today he leads a team of nine full-time ophthalmic super-specialists, most trained at his alma mater, AIIMS.
